Street Trees

In Sacramento County we are fortunate enough to have grand boulevards lined with elms, sycamores maples and more. These stately trees do more than just appeal to our aesthetics. Large trees like these lower the surrounding air temperature, clean pollution from the air, prevent soil erosion, calm traffic, and clean and retain storm water runoff. The Sacramento Tree Foundation is happy to provide residents in Sacramento County with free street trees (within 15 feet of a street) from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD).

What trees may I receive?

Typically, street trees are large trees, although occasionally medium trees are most appropriate for the site. Small trees are rarely, if ever, used as street trees. Your NeighborWoods Forester will help you make the best selection for your space. Only the largest tree suitable for the space will be provided as a street tree.

My existing street tree will need to be removed in the future. Can I plant a replacement tree now, before I remove the existing tree?

“Underplanting” (planting a young tree in the shade canopy of a mature tree) is not an acceptable arboreal practice. The young tree suffers in the shade canopy of the mature tree, distorting tree form as the young tree tries to grow toward the sun. Further, the young tree is not able to compete for root space and soil nutrients, since the older tree has already established. Trees will not be provided for underplanting.

Is there any limit to the number of trees I may receive?

The number of trees can be as small as one, and as many as you can imagine! We have experience planting single trees, or up to as many as 700 to forest an entire area. The number of trees you receive per planting will depend on the space available, the number of volunteers you can coordinate to put the trees into the ground, and the level of maintenance you can provide to protect the trees into maturity. We want every tree to receive tip top care!

Who plants the trees?

It is the responsibility of the landowner/agent to plant street trees. NeighborWoods will assist you with any necessary education.
