Businesses

All businesses in the SMUD service area, including places of worship, non-profits, and government institutions, are eligible for free SMUD shade trees.

Trees at your business may be used for the following purposes:

  • To shade a building to provide energy savings.
  • To shade a children's play area.
  • To shade a parking lot.
  • To shade the street.

How many trees may I receive?

The number of trees can be as small as one, and as many as you can imagine! We have experience planting single trees, or up to as many as 700 to forest an entire area. The number of trees you receive per planting will depend on the space available, the number of volunteers you can coordinate to put the trees into the ground, and the level of maintenance you can do to protect the trees into maturity. We want every tree to receive tip top care!

What does the Tree Foundation provide?

Along with providing free SMUD trees, stakes, and ties, we will provide you with education and expertise. We will help you choose the trees best suited for your particular location. We will teach you how to plant young trees. In many cases we can provide tools (shovels, stake drivers, pick axes, as well mulch). Our outstanding staff will also train you to take care of your young trees, including proper pruning and watering guidelines. We'll even come out and help you check on your trees after they're planted.

What kinds of trees are available?

Over 30 different types of trees are available. They include small flowering varieties all the way up to stately London planes! Above all we will help you get the right tree into the right space, helping you maximize the benefits of your trees while minimizing the time and money you will have to spend on maintaining your trees.
