Welcome Crystal, our new Community Forester!

By Crystal Sewell

November 14, 2017

Hey there! My name is Crystal and I couldn’t be more excited to start this new chapter with the Sacramento Tree Foundation. I recently graduated from William Jessup University where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and was captain of the women’s basketball team, “Go Warriors!”

When this position presented itself to me every fiber and cell in my body screamed “YES!” What could be better than working for an organization that is good for the soul, good for the community and good for our planet!? As a child, growing up in the foothills of the Sierras I was surrounded by majestic oak trees that beckoned to be climbed and a twin brother who proved to be an adequate adventure partner (though never as daring as I). My afternoons were spent catching pollywogs, creating mud castles in our creek and constantly marring the knees of my jeans with dirt and grass stains. This enthusiasm for nature has never left; in fact, in my free time I enjoy painting mountain landscapes, backpacking through the high country and shredding the gnar-gnar pow-pow (fresh powder) in the winter months.

Most of my background lies in outdoor education and adventure travel. Since 2014 I have had the pleasure of chaperoning high school students on trips throughout the Sierra Nevada, Utah and Arizona, Oregon, Washington and Canada. We whitewater raft the Colorado River, mountain bike in Squamish and Moab, spend a week canoeing the Green River and eight days sea kayaking the islands off Vancouver Island. The scenery is incredible, but my favorite part of all of this is watching just how much confidence these young adults gain over the course of one month. It is truly life-changing and I plan to continue chaperoning young adults on weekend excursions.

I feel very lucky to be able to apply my passion for the outdoors with an organization that deeply values community and understands the importance of green spaces. I am excited to be a part of the Sactree team and I look forward to getting involved with this community! Please don’t hesitate to email me crystal@sactree.com with questions about our Shade Tree program through SMUD. I would love to talk to you!
