Marketing & Communications Intern

Position Description

The Marketing and Communications Intern will be responsible for promoting the mission and the activities of the organization to a wide internal and external audience. Specific tasks will be to research, write, edit, and create e-newsletters, flyers, presentations and other printed or electronic documents.

The intern will also be expected to interface with local and regional media to increase coverage of Tree Foundation events and activities. The goal of the intern’s work will be to raise awareness of the Tree Foundation within the community, in order to increase the client, volunteer and membership base of the organization.

The intern will gain experience in researching and interviewing, as well as writing and document creation. The intern will also gain experience in using Constant Contact, Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Publisher, and SalesForce database software. Intern will be able to use Tree Foundation materials produced during the internship in their professional portfolio.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Research, write, create and send monthly membership e-newsletter
  • Research, write, create and send monthly volunteer e-newsletter
  • Create event flyers for volunteer and outreach events
  • Make sure events are listed/posted/promoted in regional media
  • Post events and news items on website, update information on website
  • Create program displays for the Tree Foundation office
  • Organize existing outreach materials
  • Develop new outreach engagement pieces
  • Attend outreach events as available
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Comfortable suggesting and implementing new strategies in addition to those assigned
  • Communicate successes and challenges with manager
  • Demonstrate professionalism and a high standard of work ethic
  • Maintain compliance with all safety guidelines and procedures
  • Present self, position and the Sacramento Tree Foundation positively in all activities and settings

Attitude, Abilities and Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills: comfortable working with all Microsoft office programs
  • Basic understanding of marketing and communication strategies
  • Understanding of nonprofit, mission based organizations
  • Interest in building a better community
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member
  • Willingness to honor all policies and procedures
  • Sound reasoning and decision making skills
  • Attention to safety and proper equipment use
  • Ability to lift at least 30 lbs
