Arbor Day Celebrations

March 3, 2015

Arbor Day is cause for a special celebration! Not only is it a day to admire the abundant tree canopy we have been gifted, it is also an occasion to plant and care for our own leafy legacy.

National Arbor Day was founded in 1872 and takes place every year throughout the country on April 24th. Elected officials and community members join together on this holiday to give back to the trees which give us so much. From formal proclamations to community-wide events, our nation’s communities work together to emphasize the importance of trees during Arbor Day.

As Californians, we get twice the tree holiday. Our great state observes both National Arbor Day in April and California Arbor Week from March 7-14 each year. So get in the holiday spirit and join an effort to pay homage to the trees that clean our air, provide wildlife habitat, keep us healthy, and make California feel like home.

Friday, March 6

California ReLeaf is kicking off the celebrations with a press conference for the Arbor Week poster contest and a special presentation of the Arbor Day Foundation Tree Champion award to Chief Ken Pimlott on behalf of Governor Brown.

Saturday, March 7 from 9:00-12:00

Sacramento Tree Foundation partners with City of Sacramento and the U.S. Forest Service to plant 24 new trees at Fisherman’s Lake. These trees will also be studied for the next 20 years to learn more about how climate change will affect our trees. Learn more on our Events page.

Saturday, March 14 from 9:00-12:00

Woodland Tree Foundation will celebrate with the City of Woodland and community volunteers by planting 100 new trees throughout town! Learn more & register to volunteer at woodlandtree.org or call (530) 867-3130.

Friday, April 24

The City of Rancho Cordova will be observing the celebration of National Arbor Day with an official proclamation reading and ceremonial tree planting. Details coming soon!

Saturday, April 25 from 9:00-12:00

The City of West Sacramento continues its tradition of hosting a National Arbor Day community event. Community members and PG&E volunteers will work together to plant 10 new willow oaks at Bridgeway Island Park.

Celebrate Arbor Day in your own community.

Whether it’s planting a new tree, caring for existing trees, or just taking a picnic to enjoy the trees, you can bring the joy of Arbor Day to your neighborhood.

However you choose to celebrate, Happy Arbor Day!
