Get to know Meredith, our NEW NeighborWoods Coordinator!

January 26, 2016

Hi everyone! I’m the newest member of the Sacramento Tree Foundation team. My name is Meredith Thompson, and I will serve as the Community Engagement Coordinator – NeighborWoods Specialist. I’m a local girl – born in Sacramento and raised in Rocklin. Since then, I’ve been a lot of places and seen a lot of things. I have lived, worked, and/or volunteered in Zambia, South Africa, Nepal, Italy, and Peru – but I am proud to call Sacramento home! I have a bachelor’s degree in Economics & International Relations from Gonzaga University (GO ZAGS!!!) and a master’s degree in Public Administration and Environmental Policy from the University of Washington. From an early age, my family implanted in me a love of everything outdoors, and I spent every second I could outside. Whether it was hours spent playing “kick the can”, bike rides with friends, or the annual family trip to Yosemite, I was drawn to the fresh air and calming effect of nature.

Prior to joining the Sacramento Tree Foundation, I worked with another local nonprofit, ReCreate, where we acted to divert items from the landfill to use for art classes and environmental education. I also spent 27 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer on the southern coast of Perú as an environmental management volunteer planting trees, building cook stoves, training fishermen, and eating delicious comida peruana. While this experience certainly fed my love of adventure and travel, it also solidified my passion and future in the field of community outreach. I find true enjoyment in being out “in the field”, and getting face time with the community that I’m serving. For me, there is no better feeling than helping a group of people realize that they have the power to affect change in their neighborhood – and assist them as they reach for their goals.

In my role as NeighborWoods Specialist, my objective will be to establish, strengthen, and increase meaningful connections between the Sacramento Tree Foundation and community stakeholders in South Sacramento. I’m looking forward to implementing the NeighborWoods program in this region – focusing on improving and maintaining the urban forest tree canopy. I will be there, in the community, to provide the citizens of South Sacramento with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to engage as citizens and plant more trees in their surrounding neighborhoods.

Even though I’m a new addition, I already recognize the expertise and passion my colleagues bring to the Sacramento Tree Foundation, and I’m excited to be joining the team! You can find me at (916) 974-4322 or meredith@sactree.com if you would like to know more about the South Sacramento NeighborWoods project.
