Announcing our NEW Urban Ecology Manager, Jennifer!

March 29, 2016

Hello! My name is Jennifer Szeliga and I am the newest member of the Sacramento Tree Foundation (STF) team! I am excited to be part of this team as the Urban Ecology Manager!

Prior to coming to STF, I spent over 16 years working with the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps program. During this time, I served in a range of positions including member, team leader, service learning coordinator, project developer, trainer, unit leader, and assistant director of projects and partnerships in California, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. I was most recently the Deputy Region Director for Programming at the Pacific Region campus here in Sacramento. In this role, I focused on project outreach and development as well as member development and training. I am committed to national and community service as a tool to help young adults develop leadership and life skills through their engagement in meaningful service experiences.

I received my Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA and my Master’s degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix Timonium, MD campus.

Originally born and raised in a small town in western New York State, I landed in Sacramento about four and half years ago. Growing up on a farm, I came to appreciate the value of our natural surroundings and the importance of taking care of the land at a very early age. While an undergraduate, I was fortunate to study the impact of wetlands and riparian buffers on nonpoint source pollution in western Pennsylvania and Queensland, Australia. These experiences have greatly shaped my views, values, knowledge, and appreciation for the environment and the role trees play in our lives.

As STF’s Urban Ecology Manager, I hope to bring together my past experiences and the mission and work of STF to build a strong understanding, knowledge, and awareness of the benefit of trees. I look forward to working with the STF team to implement tree mitigation and land enhancement projects that will help us build the best urban forest in the nation.
