Planned Giving

Generations of Sacramentans have held trees close to their hearts

A gift to the Sacramento Tree Foundation from your estate can ensure the long-term success of our efforts while providing you and your heirs' substantial benefits. Your planned gift will preserve and expand Sacramento’s tree canopy for generations to come.

Imagine a future for your community in which every neighborhood is leafy and inviting; where every home is cool and shaded; where every child can grow up with clean air and water.

When you plan today to give tomorrow through your estate, you will support this vision, and you will become a member of our “Legacy Circle”.

Here are four basic ways to set up your future gift:

  1. 1. Add Sacramento Tree Foundation as a percent (%) or lump sum beneficiary of your life insurance or retirement plan.Your advisor or broker can give you a beneficiary change form and help you add a % gift to our organization and the remaining % to your other beneficiaries.
  2. 2. Put Sacramento Tree Foundation as a beneficiary on an account that you have at a financial institution. For example, if you have a CD at a bank, you can tell the bank to put TOD (transfer on death) on the account title and our organization’s name and tax ID# where the account will go to after you pass on.
  3. 3. Add Sacramento Tree Foundation in your will or estate plan. You can do this with your attorney. We can refer you to a qualified attorney if you need one. Sample language for adding Sacramento Tree Foundation to your will or estate plan: "I give [____% of my estate] [the residue of my estate] [ ____% of the residue of my estate] [$___, etc.] to the Sacramento Tree Foundation, a California nonprofit corporation, for its general uses and purposes. The Tax ID# for the Sacramento Tree Foundation is 94-2825234. The Sacramento Tree Foundation is currently located at 191 Lathrop Way, Suite D, Sacramento, CA 95818."
  4. 4. If you need income from your assets, you can take cash or an investment and buy a charitable gift annuity (CGA). It will give you income for the rest of your life and the balance in the account will go to our organization when you die.

Those are the basic ways, yet there are many ways to save taxes, increase current income and give to charities at the same time. Please consult with your financial professionals to explore those more sophisticated options.

One important point – you need to use our legal name, Sacramento Tree Foundation, and our Tax ID # which is 94-2825234 in your documents.

Your gift through your estate is more than a personal financial decision. It is your statement about what you value in life and how you want to make a difference in the community.

Your gift to the Sacramento Tree Foundation will create a legacy to inspire your own family and friends and will be a legacy of beauty, shade and clean air to help others. What a wonderful way to leave your fingerprints on the future.
