Director of Development

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development is responsible for all activities related to generating philanthropic support for the mission and programs of the Sacramento Tree Foundation. The Director is responsible for the creation and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for fund development. Specific responsibilities will include front-line development activities as a major gifts officer, capital campaign lead, and special events, planned giving and membership services manager. The Executive Assistant supports all of these efforts and reports directly to the Director of Development. The position will assist board and staff with annual giving program s and play a significant role in partnership development and stewardship . The Director will also assist the Executive Director in expanding the board’s role in fund development. Additionally, the Director will work closely with board and staff to implement communications strategies designed to position the Tree Foundation favorably in the community.

The Director of Development is an integral member of the Sacramento Tree Foundation’s executive leadership team working to grow the Sacramento Tree Foundation as a respected leader of environmental stewardship and community-based action. This is a unique role and a great opportunity for a development professional to immediately take a lead role with the Tree Foundation’s first ever capital campaign while continuing to grow the impact of the organization’s annual fund and fundraising events.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

Capital Campaign Lead / Major Gift Officer (70%)

  1. Manage all strategies and activities for capital campaign/major gift donor identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  2. Create and maintain management systems to support a robust Hanami Line capital campaign.
  3. Communicate lavishly with board of directors, capital campaign committee, staff, partners and supporters on capital campaign progress and status.
  4. Strategically encourage the full participation by all board members in delivering successfully fund development activities.

Annual Fund and Special Events Oversight (30%)

  1. Oversee annual fund systems and processes to ensure best practices are followed, donor communications are meaningful and authentic, and fundraising activities are optimized.
  2. Work with the Fund Development team to design, implement and manage fundraising activities including board and staff annual giving, membership program, special events and other Tree Foundation-related fundraising opportunities as they develop.
  3. Prepare all Development reports for the Executive Director and make presentations to the Board of Directors and other agencies as requested.
  4. Develop and manage an effective program for donor recognition and stewardship, including accurate listings of donors in printed materials, appropriate signage, and routine communications with donors/prospects designed to keep them interested and engaged.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION: B.A. or B.S. degree strongly preferred but experience can be used in place of a degree.

EXPERIENCE: 5+ years of experience in frontline fund development. Capital campaign experience preferred.

SKILLS:

  • Advanced communicator with excellent listening skills; authentic builder of positive relationships; and capable of sharing compelling stories that highlight the Tree Foundation’s values, mission and achievements
  • Cultural competency and an approach that is appreciative, affirming, and inclusive of all cultural backgrounds
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office and QuickBooks; experience with Salesforce or similar CRM/donor-tracking software
  • Strong understanding of development accounting/IRS requirements
  • Able to consistently document all moves made throughout the donor gift cycle in donor-tracking database
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to effectively organize and complete multiple activities, priorities, and assignments in a timely manner
  • Demonstrates effective communication, cooperation, and creativity when problem solving, resolving conflict, and managing change
  • Provide outstanding customer service to all members, employees, vendors, and clients
  • Preserve confidential information with appropriate discretion
  • Positive attitude, professional manner and appearance in all situations

TEMPERAMENT: Must be comfortable working in a mission-based, non-profit environment. The ideal candidate for the position will have a passion for our mission and a commitment to excellent customer service.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide training, education and positive reinforcement to support staff to achieve excellence in development administrative, stewardship, and communication activities. The Executive Assistant reports to the Director of Development.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends. The Tree Foundation office is a casual environment. Both indoor office work and some outdoor work is required for this position.
