How the CARES Act is helping donors support their favorite nonprofits
The CARES Act is making it easier for people and companies to support the nonprofit organizations that uplift their communities, especially in times like these. For 2020 tax returns, the rules about deductions for charitable contributions have been updated:
- For individuals who take the standard deduction on their tax returns, an above-the-line charitable contribution deduction of $300 is allowed ($600 for married couples).
- For individuals who itemize their deductions, cash contributions to public charities may be fully deducted (up to 100% of adjusted gross income) without regard to the usual percentage limitation. Contributions in excess of the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income may be carried forward for five years.
- For corporations, the limitation on charitable contributions has increased from 10% to 25% of taxable income.
As a nonprofit organization, the Sacramento Tree Foundation relies on the generosity of our community to offer a variety of programs that grow and sustain our urban forest. Your donations are even more impactful now because they come at a pivotal time as we continue to speak for Sacramento's trees while also shifting our programs online.
